Yours sincerely,
Dear Private Secretary,
In reply to your letter of 7th April, on the subject of Lieut:Commander haslewood's activities in Hong Kong, the fects concerning the termination of his appoints Superinten- dent of the Chart Depôt are as follow:-
About Hovember, 1919, the Governor informed the Jommodore that embarrassment was being caused to the Hong Long Government by rs. Heslewood's letters to the Press on the subject of Child Slavery, and that either these letters
st cease or thet he must tere stens to put a stop to a state of affairs which was likely to create a disturbance in the Colon".
The Commodore interviewed Lieut; Commerder Englewood and told him of the Governor's attitude. He replied that he
greed with and was ready to support his wife's action and did not propose to take any steps to restrein her. The Commodore thereupon informed him that he must refer the whole matter to the Commander-in-Chief, who was present et that time in Hong ilong. The Commander-in-Chief, Vice-Admiral Sir A.L.Duff, KCB., reports that the Commodore showed him a communication from the Governor as to the activities of Lieut:Commender lieslewood and is wife in the Press Campaign against "Child Slavery" at Bong ..ong. The Governor was of opinion that it was most undesirable that anyone holding the position of an Officer, or his wife, should make exaggerated allegations against the Chinese Community. The Commodore informed the Commander-in-Chief of the unsatisfac- try result of his interview with Lieut: Commender Heslewood,
he Corender-in-Chief accordingly interviewed Lieut: Commander
slewood and informed him that though es Admiral he had no jurisdiction over this Officer's wife, he considered that if
e wished to continue his campaign he ought to resim his official empointment.
In the meantime rs. Haslewood was taken to hospital and her mental condition was such that the ioctors had greve doubts of her recovery if she did not leave the Colony at once. The Commander-in-Chief informed Lieut:Commander Haslewood that e was prepared to allow him to proceed home with his wife, in Thich case his pointment would be filled by another Officer. Lieut: Commander Haslevood thereupon requested to be sent home
